Emily Chou, M.S.
Associate Marriage and Family Therapist
Is your child or teen struggling with overwhelming emotions, behaviors, or recovering from a traumatic experience? Do you feel confused about how to help them, and scared about their future? Navigating the process of getting support for a child or yourself can feel daunting. Perhaps you feel uncertain of the process, don’t know what to expect, or are intimidated by the prospect of opening up and sharing parts of your family or yourself with someone you just met. Often, the apprehension about therapy can feel like just another barrier to finding the support you want and deserve. I am here to help guide you through this process.
I have spent the past four years supporting young adults, teens, young children and their families to navigate developmental transitions, family ruptures, and attachment concerns. I specialize in helping people move through grief, whether from loss of a loved one, identity, career, school, friendship, or dream for the future and find meaning and purpose in life again.
Emily is a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, supervised by Hanna Stensby, LMFT, with a master’s degree in psychology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). Over the past four years, Emily has worked with diverse populations in a variety of settings, including The Village Family Services, Child Therapy Center of Los Angeles, and Martha’s Place Children’s Center in San Luis Obispo. Emily has received specialized training in the assessment and treatment of children ages 0-5 who have experienced trauma and/or developmental delays. She has experience working with a variety of traumatic experiences including grief, anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation, PTSD, traumatic loss and separation, attachment disruptions and difficulties, and child abuse and neglect. Prior to becoming a therapist, Emily received her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in applied developmental psychology from UCLA and has a background in early childhood care and education.
What to expect when working with me
I utilize a research-based, holistic, and collaborative approach tailored to each individual’s unique strengths and needs. Drawing primarily from attachment-based, person-centered, existential, and trauma-informed frameworks I help clients navigate a variety of challenges including grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, and life transitions. Over and over, I have seen and experienced the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. It is an honor to create and share a safe, consistent space for children and families to feel seen, heard, understood, cared for, and valued.
Emily embodies Flourish Mindset’s core values of authenticity and collaboration in her work with clients . As a therapist she believes she must be authentic to help her clients feel truly seen, heard and to achieve their own authenticity. Through collaboration, she feels we learn from one another and are of service to each other. Emily works with clients of all ages, life experiences, and backgrounds. She strives conscientiously and continuously to deepen and expand her capacity to grow her appreciation of the differing cultural experiences that factors like race, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender, and age play in shaping her clients’ strengths, challenges, and sources of meaning-making.
More than just my work:
“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.” – Khalil Gibran
Some of my favorite ways to take care of myself include listening to music, practicing art (usually watercolor or calligraphy), baking, and watching my favorite tv shows, movies, or musicals.
I grew up doing gymnastics and later played volleyball as well.
